What They Wore and How

Interior design usually takes a back seat to fashion. But not in early May, when NYCxDesign (otherwise known as New York Design Week) takes over the five boroughs with hundreds of exhibitions, trade shows and parties. Among the most curated is Collective Design, which features 31 galleries specializing in modern and innovative collectible design. A V.I.P. preview on May 3 drew a stylish gathering of designers, buyers and creative types.

Occupation: Interior designer.

Age: 47

Tell me about your suit.

This is from Isetan, in Tokyo. I just didn’t want to wear black. Everyone is wearing black.

And your pocket square?

I found this at a flea market.

Are those wingtip sneakers?

They’re supercomfortable. They’re from Cole Haan. Because when you’re an interior designer you’re walking around all day, meeting with clients. I want to wear Ferragamo, but literally, you can’t wear a regular leather shoe.

My last question is about your glasses.

They’re just Warby Parker. Totally normal.

Rita Nakouzi

Occupation: Concept designer and trend forecaster.

Age: Not given.

That’s a great dress.

It’s by a label called Hellessy, which does these beautiful minimalistic pieces but always with an interesting twist.

What’s the twist?
The fold and the bias cut. Then it has these beautiful darts. And I love the color.

And where are your boots from?

These are Fendi. I got them at Barneys. They were actually a gift from my husband. But what is really cool about them is this woodwork detail on the heel.

What’s the story with your little purple bracelet?

I meditate, but also friends of mine have a project called the Uplift Projectand they do kind of wellness and uplifting community building.

Julio Montero (with the artist Nicole Nadeau)

Occupation: Creative director of the Blond.

Age: 32

Nice jacket.

The motorcycle jacket is from BLK DNM.

How about the black denim jeans?

BLK DNM. I do like Uniqlo as well. Good fit.

And you’ve got a hoodie underneath.

This is Levi’s.

Is this what you wear to work, or more for art shows?

This is what I wear everyday walking around the city. I ride my bicycle back and forth from meeting to meeting. I came here to check out my friend, Nicole Nadeau.

Is your backpack military?

No this backpack is a Levi’s backpack. I’ve been wearing Levi’s since I was a kid.

Where did you grow up?

South Bronx.

 Yara Flinn

Occupation: Fashion designer.

Age: 33

What brings you here?

My boyfriend, Drew Seskunas, designed the installation, Glacial Drift, that is outside.

You are wearing a very long coat.

It’s gigantic. It’s vintage Gianfranco Ferré. My look today is kind of like a deranged schoolgirl.

Were you a deranged schoolgirl?

Yes, probably. Actually, I was kind of a nerd.

Tell me about your earrings. They’re fabulous.

I made them. I’m crafty sometimes.

Do you have an Etsy store?

I would love to have an Etsy store. I shop a lot on Etsy.

 Matthew Morgan

Occupation: Designer.

Age: 39

The first thing I noticed was your mullet.

It’s hard to ignore.

Tell me about it.

I started to go bald really young and the only way to deal with that was to do like a funny hairstyle. So I’ve been doing a mullet for 10 years probably.

And your lavender pants?

Acne Studios. Got them today, actually, to match the couch. Paul Smith shirt. I’m not a big tuck-in guy, normally. So this is a leap for me. Vintage Comme des Garçons jacket, which is the first real serious piece of clothing I bought about 15 years ago. I’ve worn it three times.

And those shoes.

They’re so uncomfortable. I need a massage right now so bad.

They look new, too.

Got them today. We drove this furniture across the country, arrived yesterday, and I got here and realized I don’t have clothes. So I had to go shopping. I went to Ina.

 Mariah Mckenzie

Occupation: Model and actress.

Age: 22

How did you come to work this booth?

I’ve always been interested in the art world and I met the owner of theJohnson Trading Gallery at Art Basel. He asked me to assist — I think because I have a pretty face.

Tell me about your dress.

It almost gives me the Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress feel. Although it doesn’t wrap, it’s much more simple than that.

I like your necklace.

I just got back from South Africa. I was there for three months modeling. I saw this piece and I was like, “Wow I’m so obsessed with chokers at the moment. I have to have it.” I bargained with her for a little bit and then I realized I’m going to be the only one in the States who has it.

What did it run you?

Ten bucks.

Sebastian Errazuriz

Occupation: Designer and artist.

Age: 38

Is your work on display?

No, it’s not. They generally tend to show at Basel and so on. But I love design and I have a lot of friends showing here.

Take me through your outfit.

The jacket is Yves Saint Laurent. The vest is flea market. The tie I have no idea and the jeans are H&M. Boots I got in London.

You’ve matched your narrow lapel to a narrow tie.

Yes, yes. I tried to match it on purpose. There are a lot of those details that people don’t know. When you get a jacket, you have to make sure that it fits you snug on the shoulders. You’ve got to be able to put one fist of space between you and the button otherwise it doesn’t work.

Where did you get your bag?

It’s Ghurka. They do supernice leathers.

Cerise Zelenetz

Occupation: Illustrator and writer.

Age: 23

What are you doing here today?

My boyfriend, Benjamin Kicic, is showing at the fair so I’m here to support him.

Take me through what you are wearing.

Most of this is just old vintage stuff. The coat I got at a thrift store in Vermont, where I grew up. But the jeans are also just old discount store. These are reverse fit Gap, from the ’90s.

Are you into the ’90s?

I am. I’m sort of all over the place. Nineties are definitely influencing me at the moment but also I’ve always been into the ’20s and ’70s.
